How Not Having a Formal Qualification in Interior Design Is Actually Your Superpower!
The other day, I saw a post on social media where someone boldly stated that those without a formal qualification in Interior Design should only be called Interior Decorators. That comment stopped me in my tracks. I couldn’t disagree more! This got me thinking about how many of the most talented and successful Interior Designers I’ve met—and even some of the biggest names in the industry—don’t have formal qualifications. In fact, I believe that NOT having a formal degree in Interior Design can be your greatest strength.
Here’s why…
The Most Successful Designers Often Have Unconventional Backgrounds
I have a degree in Interior Design, but throughout my career, I quickly learned that it's not what you learn in the classroom that makes the difference—it’s what you learn on real projects. During my time working in multiple design studios across the world, I noticed that the most talented designers weren’t necessarily those with a formal education in Interior Design. Instead, they came from fine art backgrounds, the corporate world, or even entirely unrelated industries. I found that their diverse experiences brought fresh perspectives, creativity, and business acumen that gave them an edge over the traditionally trained designers in the studio’s.
I saw former graphic designers with an impeccable eye for composition, ex-corporate professionals with outstanding project management skills, and artists who approached Interior Design with a completely unique creative vision. These people went on to build highly successful Interior Design businesses, precisely because they didn’t follow the same path as everyone else.
Some of the Most Sucessful Interior Designers Didn’t Study Interior Design
If you need proof that a formal qualification isn’t the be all and end all for success, just look at some of the biggest names in the industry. Sophie Paterson, Kelly Hoppen, Nina Campbell, and Jonathan Adler all built extraordinary careers without traditional Interior Design degrees. They relied on passion, raw talent, and business savvy to carve out their own paths—and their success speaks for itself.
This should serve as inspiration for anyone who feels like they’re at a disadvantage because they don’t have a degree. The truth is, the industry values skill, creativity, and an entrepreneurial mindset far more than a piece of paper.
Real-World Experience and Passion Matter More Than a Degree
Interior Design is not a profession where a degree alone guarantees success. What truly makes an Interior Designer stand out is their ability to create beautiful, functional spaces, understand their clients' needs, and run a profitable business.
Learning on the job, working with clients, and building a strong portfolio often outweigh the theoretical knowledge gained in a classroom. Many self-taught designers and career changers thrive in this industry because they are driven by passion, continuously learn, and develop a unique style that makes them sought after by clients.
So if you’ve ever doubted yourself because you don’t have a formal qualification in Interior Design, take this as your sign to stop. Your background—no matter what it is—can be your greatest advantage. Whether you’re coming from fine art, business, or a completely different field, your unique experiences give you an edge that traditional training can’t.
The most successful designers are the ones who embrace their individuality, hone their skills through experience, and have the confidence to put themselves out there. Your superpower isn’t a degree—it’s your creativity, passion, and determination.
